I have a new day coming soon and I’m very excited to share it. A woman from work that I’ve known since the early days of my career contacted me recently. She said that she is always inspired by the quotes and positive comments I post on my work bulletin board each week. She’s not the first to tell me this and it’s part of what inspires me to continue my practice of spreading positive words. But this time, things are different. She talked about her work group and how they have a monthly speaker come to their meetings. For November they were seeking someone to come talk to the group about GRATITUDE. That’s fitting since November is the month of Thanksgiving Day here in the US. Then she said it – they want to spread the great benefits of an attitude of gratitude and they thought I’d be perfect for task.
I’m not shy and don’t fear public speaking. I have been a speaker for work related topics – Myers-Briggs training of course, policy and benefits deployments, and all sorts of other HR related topics. But this is different. This will be the first time that a group from my company has asked me to speak from my heart. This will indeed be an opportunity for me to bring my whole self to work in a way I’ve not done before. So, excited isn’t the right word for how I feel about this. I am honored is more in line with it. My dream is to be an inspirational speaker. And now, I have a glimpse at step one.
Of course, I immediately said yes, and in the 2nd moment felt the panic arise. What on earth will I say to a group of business folks. Yes, they are professional and that doesn’t intimidate me. But these are MY colleagues. Do I have 30 minutes of inspiration to share in that setting? It isn’t difficult to reach their minds, but I want to touch their hearts.
Today I was talking to my boss about diversity and inclusion. It’s a popular topic in the workplace, especially in the HR crowd. But we weren’t having the normal conversation. We weren’t talking representation numbers or affinity groups or interventions. We were talking about magic.
You see, in my world diversity and inclusion doesn’t just mean race, gender, religion, etc. Yes, those are the outward, noticeable characteristics. But we were talking about diversity of thinking and inspiration. This falls right in line with my Myers-Briggs practice but we weren’t talking about that either.
Have you ever been in a situation where you were talking with someone with a totally different mindset, point of view, or lens on life. And in the conversation you strike a back and forth banter that moves your mind to new and different options. And out of those options comes the magic of innovation. You, together, create something so different that neither of you would have come up with it alone. It was a synergy of creative energy coming from different directions that collide in a spectacular wave of creation. That’s what we were talking about today. We’ve both seen it. We’ve both felt it. But we are at a bit of a loss in how to create it or enable it to happen in a more predictable way. If we could create a culture that not only enabled it but also was a catalyst for it we would crack the diversity secret code. We would transform our business and give a reason for diverse thinkers to crave our way of being.
Today has been super busy, which is good. It makes the day pass quicker. I’ve had the opportunity to work on my favorite thing – Myers-Briggs, which is a personality assessment. It’s a very useful tool that I use with teams for team development and effectiveness. I have a lot of passion for this work because I see it play out in just about every situation and conversation. At work I’m kinda famous for it. Well, that and posting positive inspiration quotes on my board each week.
I’ve been told that I light up like a Christmas tree and “glow” when I’m teaching and talking about Myers-Briggs. Lucky me! Can you imagine the illumination around this place? lol
But it has also made for a long 12 hour day. A long, productive, happy day. To bring it to a close I’m sharing a song that has been stuck in my head all day (yep, you’re welcome).
